Courtyard-Winton-Scott-Architects-photoSkidompha: A Resource for a Unique Community

A little more than a century ago a small group of people saw a need for a public library in their community on the Damariscotta River.

Famed for its world-class shipbuilding in the middle of the previous century, the pace of community life had slowed somewhat by the early 20th century, when railroads had reduced demand for the area’s maritime industry, as the nation had rapidly expanded westward. Damariscotta, Newcastle and Nobleboro  was now a bucolic backwater that had only begun to draw the attention of summertime visitors.

Perhaps worried that its citizenry would become less worldly than in the days when making sloops and clippers ships demanded a more cosmopolitan perspective, the group came together to form a small collection of books for their community in a convenient location. The library slowly expanded until 2001 when it almost literally was bursting at its seams and a larger home was built next door. (You can read more of our history here [link])

Skidompha’s downtown Damariscotta location ensured its success, for Damariscotta has grown to become a unique and vital commercial, artistic, financial, medical and social hub for the entire Pemaquid Penninsula and Lincoln County; The need for a library has never been stronger.

The of Skidompha today serves a much larger community with far more diverse and sophisticated informational, entertainment, and social needs, but the founders’ basic criteria are still being met: providing the community with a broad collection of world-class reading materials in a handy location.
